The Genesis

Green Campus Ghana is an organized group of enthusiastic youth, currently in and out of 5 tertiary institutions in Ghana, passionate about making a contribution towards solving the sanitation and climate crisis, primarily, by developing ‘Green’-oriented products, projects and campaigns and promoting the cause for a sustainable environment.

The Green Campus Project, begun in 2016 in the University of Ghana, Legon Campus, and was initiated by Papa Yaw Agyekum Addo.

The project is a bold attempt at tackling the waste menace plaguing our society, right from its source - our homes, hostels and offices.

The Green Campus team have ingeniously designed and manufactured eco-friendly Green Campus Trash bags that are used for proper and convenient management of the waste we create. The bags were designed to support waste assortment and collection interventions, hence their colour codes: green - for bottles and glass, white - for papers and plastics, brown - for organic waste.

Well aware of the poor waste management and assortment culture of the ordinary Ghanaian, we have and continue to embark on numerous annual sanitation education campaigns and outreach programs to spread the message of improving our sanitation, proper disposal of plastics, etc.

Currently also, we are growing an online social community to champion this agenda utilizing platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Although this project is still in its budding stages, we have managed to raise 90+ sanitation ambassadors in the various tertiary institutions, distributed over 60,000 trash bags and embarked on numerous social awareness campaigns, memorably, the Clean Up exercise at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Eye Clinic, the Word on the Streets campaign at the Independence Square, Accra, the Sanitation Awareness Outreach at the Sakumono Estates Com¬munity and also partnering with sister organisations such as the United Nations Students Association, Miss Galaxy Ghana Pageant and the African Union Hall Community.

At Green Campus, we believe everyone is a Green Ambassador, and with conscious and concerted effort, we can as youth, improve the environment we live in to positively influence our climate!

Ultimately, we want to awaken the consciousness of all youth to the global crisis at hand and inspire a call to action, contributing our quota to achieving SDG 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
